Elena Garcia-Lorente, PhD Candidate at the Experimental Hepatology and Liver Transplantation research group of the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria La Fe (IIS La Fe), presented HYPIEND research on the effects of endocrine-disrupting chemicals on liver metabolism at EUROTOX 2026.
The 60th Congress of the European Societies of Toxicology (EUROTOX 2026) took place from 13 to 16 September 2026 at the Austria Center Vienna, Austria, under the theme “Toxicology without borders”.
Garcia-Lorente presented the poster P19-21, “Disruption of lipid metabolism and cytochrome P450 activity by endocrine-disrupting chemicals in human hepatic cell models”, during the poster session on Liver Toxicology, on Monday, 14 September 2026. The work was developed together with Ágata Llobet-Mut, Eva Serrano-Candelas, M. Teresa Donato and Laia Tolosa, researchers at the HYPIEND project.
The study investigated 33 candidate endocrine-disrupting chemicals using two human liver cell models. The results showed that some of the chemicals tested can modify cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzyme activity. The study also found that compounds including di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) promoted lipid accumulation in liver cells, providing further evidence of the potential role of some EDCs in processes associated with liver steatosis.
As highlighted in the poster, the findings demonstrate the value of in vitro human cell models for investigating how endocrine disruptors interfere with metabolic processes and for screening substances with potential metabolism-disrupting and steatogenic effects.
