On June 10, 2025, Elena García Lorente, researcher from HYPIEND partner Hospital Universitario La Fe (HULAFE), presented the project’s approach for studying Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals’ (EDCs) health impacts during the IV PhD Day IIS La Fe, that took place in Valencia, Spain.
Elena García Lorente presented the paper titled “Developing a cell-based screening toolbox for studying endocrine disrupting chemicals”, co-authored by Elena García Lorente, Patricia Ros-Tárraga and Laia Tolosa, from IIS La Fe, and Ágata Llobet, Rita Ortega-Vallbona, and Eva Serrano-Candelas, from ProtoQSAR.
The poster proposes different cell-based models to gain mechanistic understanding of the EDC effects as more information is needed on the mode of action of EDCs mixtures. Determining the endocrine activity of chemicals is complex and requires the integration of different preclinical models as the harmful effects of EDCs occur via hormone receptors and their signalling pathways, interfering with hormone synthesis, metabolism and function.
From these preliminary results, HYPIEND team will select effective concentrations, and effects of EDC co-exposure will be evaluated to ensure proper estimations of related health effect risks produced by EDC.
PhD Day IIS La Fe is a scientific activity organized for the institution’s doctoral students. It encourages communication between the different research groups, platforms, and units, offering the youngest students the opportunity to experience their first speaking role in a friendly environment.
